A divorced, middle-aged English professor finds himself increasingly unable to resist affairs with his female students. 作者笔下的“耻辱”对象肯定不是单一所指：大学教授David对上过的女学生的内疚，女儿对于被性侵的隐忍，以及南非后殖民时代的种族对立，这几个元素一起构成了小说的主要冲突。故事当中最让人印象深刻的，是David在女儿农场休养时，对于动物态度的改观，其实可以引申到整个价值体系的改变，牵涉到生存状态和人际关系，真是既讽刺又可悲。无论农村还是城市，一旦跟丑闻沾边，生活肯定没法平静了，你注定会接受他人审视甚至打击。
