评分读Middlemarch的半年并不是轻松的日子，尤其是读前面大部分时，几度想要放弃。不仅仅是为了George Eliot所运用的极为丰富的只有在那个时代才会被运用的英式英语庞大的词汇量，也不仅是书中复杂难以理解的19世纪20-30年代英国的宗教和政治背景，而是这本书构造的复杂庞大的人物...
评分小说的叙述者 《米德尔马契》中的叙述者能看得穿人物的愚蠢、自欺和自以为是，这简直是灾难。他直接告诉读者，此处应该给予同情！但却无理无据。他所讲的那一套，无非是艾略特式的讽刺，图一时口快而已，把小说里的人物都给浪费了。 而小说里的人物完全意识不到，无论何时何地...

评分每一个人物都有立体感
评分其实我读的时候一直觉得在对婚姻隐忍道德的大框架下，其实漂浮着Eliot精妙设计的adultery impulse（double narrative progressions?）。典型的维多利亚偏重欢喜基调的结局。Middlemarch的‘middle"’，既是transition，又是commonness。
评分观察细致入微，描写入木三分。笔下除了善良、热情、真诚，也有丑恶、平庸、虚伪，但艾略特对这一切都报以同情和宽容。"People are almost always better than their neighbors think they are."
