哈佛大学亚当斯大学（AdamsUniversity）讲座教授兼早期美国史詹姆斯·邓肯·菲利普（James Duncan Philips）讲座教授，是诸多美国历史著作的作者，包括《托马斯·哈钦森的苦难历程》（The Ordeal of Thomas Hutchinson，Harvard，1974），该书获得了历史著作中的国家图书奖，以及《渡海西行的人》（Voyagers to the West，1986），该书跟《美国革命的思想意识渊源》一样，获得了普利策历史图书奖。

这本书的中译本，是由时任西北政法大学《法律科学》编辑的涂永前先生翻译的。可能是作者的法律专业背景，在翻译这本书时逻辑性非常的古怪。大量的使用“他们”指代各种不同的概念，甚至在前面根本没有提到过的，让人读起来很费劲，就跟看用翻译机翻译的电影字幕一样。而...
