This book is an attempt to spell out the content of a biblical<br >worldview and its significance for our lives as we seek to be obedient<br >to the Scriptures. The ideas that make up this worldview are not<br >original with me. They come from a long tradition of Christian<br >reflection on the Scriptures and our overall perspective on the world,<br >a tradition rooted in the Scriptures themselves. It has had as some<br >of its most prominent representatives the Church Fathers Irenaeus<br >and Augustine, and the Reformers Tyndale and Calvin.<br > This scripturally informed worldview is sometimes called "refor-<br >mational," after the Protestant Reformation, which discovered af-<br >resh the biblical teaching concerning the depth and scope of sin<br >and redemption. The desire to live by Scripture alone, rather than<br >Scripture alongside of tradition, is a hallmark of the Reformers. We<br >follow their path in this emphasis as well as in wanting an ongoing<br >reformation, in wanting to be re-formed by the Scriptures contin-<br >uously (see Acts 17:11, Rom. 12:2) rather than living by unexam-<br >ined traditions.<br > Reformational reflection on worldview has taken distinctive shape<br >as it has moved into the twentieth century, something that can be<br >seen specifically in the work of such Dutch leaders as Abraham<br >Kuyper, Herman Bavinck, Herman Dooyeweerd, and D. H. T. Vol-<br >lenhoven.
