It also analyzes the arguments of Catharine MacKinnon for the suppression of pornography and traces the operations of the old South African censorship system.

［实在不知道怎么用中文写可以绕过敏感词］Coetzee on censorship. 2 themes -- politics (brotherly rivalry b/w state and art v. father-son struggle b/w the two), and porn (freedom of speech/desire v. protecting women and children). 而作者一开始就承认，知识分子因为崇尚理性克制的态度，一方面容易同情censorship赖以生存的义愤感，一方面无法打心底里尊重各类道德义愤。作者态度的矛盾和主题的矛盾交叠，很多章节放在今天的语境下看有如预言。
