Penguin 1980年版，Stephen Gill的引言十分精彩。引言第4章（21页）讲到，此书“有关道德，但不预设道德立场”（Adam Bede is a moral but not moralistic book），立刻联想到毛老师讲过的《金碗》。果不其然，这篇引言也提到了《金碗》，说Eliot不像James那样有意隐藏作者声音，而恰恰相反。
