The Hong Kong Bird Watching Society has published "The Avifauna of Hong Kong" in November 2001. Following the tradition of high-quality annual bird reports produced in recent years, this is the product of the analysis of 41 years of HKBWS records and surveys, including the first comprehensive breeding bird survey carried out in Hong Kong. In a detailed analysis of the status and distribution of each species in Hong Kong, comparisons are made with data collated as far back as 1861, allowing an assessment of status and distribution changes that have occurred in the interim. These, together with a review of 20 years of waterbird count data, an assessment of the effect of the wild bird trade on birds in Hong Kong and a summary of data collected as part of a long-term ringing programme make this an essential reference to the status and distribution of the birds of south China.
