This book arose out of the complaints of language teachers that books on L2 learning were too academic and insufficiently linked to the classroom. It benefits from discussions and examples given by teachers, students, colleagues and friends trroughout, particularly Bernard Spolsky, David Singleton, Han Dechert, Patsy Lithtbown and Leslie Dickinson. It would never have been finished without the influence of David Murray, Mike Osborne, Ornette Coleman, and Steve Williamson, and of Sam, prince of black cats.
'The really important things is less the destruction of bad old methods than a positive indication of the new ways to be followed if we are to have thoroughly efficient teaching in modern languages.'
Otto Jespersen 1904
