For anyone who want to know how art history, after various transformations of the past century, can still achieve in the level of methodology, this ambitious book is one you can't miss, like at all.

书本身极有野心，延续着一些重要文献提出的课题。写绘画的部分艰难而牵强，雕塑和建筑反而有一定的创见。除了开头那段梳理reform circle的关系，Nagel完全没有justify他将这些案例整合在一起的原因，这些案例的典型性和论述的适用范围都值得质疑（比如saint jerome画中的十字这个非常普遍的范式），而且如一篇书评所言，这本书在方法论上太专注于那些宗教改革者的mind，而忽略了这些案例的接受方，研究后者和前者的关系，不论是对应还是冲突，都能更深入探讨所谓的controversy。这本书整体的argument仍然可以为后来的学者提供一些有趣的思路。
