開篇梳理瞭關於英國小說興起學術界幾個流派。本書結閤福柯的discourse理論認為十八世紀小說興起建立在news/novels discourse之上。主要探討瞭十六到十八世紀的新聞及笛福、理查德遜和菲爾丁的小說。結論：Novels are framed works whose attitude towards fact and fiction is constitutively ambivalent. 最有意思的一點：在最後引入阿爾都塞等對意識形態的探討，認為Novels seem to embody within their structure the same process inherent in ideology. 但同時，小說也反意識形態，正是小說的雙重功能使得其有持續的張力。
