好书。Late Antiquity的奠基之作。Peter Brown在本书中聚焦公元3世纪末到7世纪初的社会史与宗教史，并且随着章节的发展展现出了这个时代重心的东移：Rome-Constantinople-Damascus，从而体现了（西）罗马帝国-（东）罗马帝国-波斯帝国-阿拉伯帝国的继承与流变。西欧的讨论缺失是一大问题，全书读完也有一点点hintsight的感觉。因为研究时段比较长、范围广、偏重分析而非叙事，不太适合新人读。Late Antiquity到现在也有很多成果了，不过返回来看看早期研究也挺有趣的。很多论点依然不过时。8.7。
