ON February the First 1887, the Lady Vain was lost by collision with a derelict when about the latitude 1 degree S. and longitude 107 degree W. On January the Fifth, 1888-that is eleven months and four days after-my uncle, Edward Prendick, a private gentleman, who certainly went aboard the Lady Vain at Callao, and who had been considered drowned, was picked up in latitude 5 degree 3 S. and longitude 101 degree W. in a small open boat of which the name was illegible, but which is supposed to have belonged to the missing schooner Ipecacuanha. He gave such a strange account of himself that he was supposed demented. Subsequently he alleged that his mind was a blank from the moment of his escape from the Lady Vain. His case was discussed among psychologists at the time as a curious instance of the lapse of memory consequent upon physical and mental stress. The following narrative was found among his papers by the undersigned, his nephew and heir, but unaccompanied by any definite request for publication.

我讀的是oxford university齣版的版本。我非常喜歡這本書，以及Wells寫的Time Machine 和 War of The Worlds. 他很會講故事，看著很起勁。這是大一要讀的其中一本……也是第一本讓我感到閱讀的快樂。

充滿矛盾的一本書。魯賓遜式的殖民敘事嵌套瞭對人性和獸性的討論，神學的物種等級被植入進瞭進化論裏。獸人社會近於dystopia，人類角色從造物主、統治者轉變為獸人中一員。獸性當然是危險、令人不適的，但獸性也蘊於群體之中。敘述者甚至同情獸人夾在人性和獸性之間的處境，看得齣對人性和身份的焦慮。對類人生物的厭惡可以跟格列佛遊記對比。
