Macchia means "spotted" in Italian, but ever since the Renaissance, macchia has been associated with a sketchlike method of applying the initial color to a drawing or painting. Dale Chihuly took this idea to the hotshop and produced the Macchia series. Chihuly alla Macchia presents the series, along with close-up detailed photographs and Chihuly's drawings, to give readers an intimate view of each of the Macchias. The dramatic nature of this series is beautifully presented in Chihuly alla Macchia.
