This two-volume compendium covers the illustrated sources on sport in Pharaonic Egypt. By adopting a wide definition of sport, it ranges from bucolic scenes and target archery to chariot driving, horse training, hunting, wrestling, physical recreation, board games, acrobatics, dancing and water sports. Over 2000 documents are described in detail with systematic indication of the location, dating, material and seminal literature. The hieroglyphic captions appear in transcription and translation. A selection of illustrated documents, accounting for about half of the total, appear in the illustrations volume. Accompanying maps allocate the material to specialist fields on the basis of topographical distribution and chronological density.
