Based on interviews with many grandparents and members of parent groups, this guide addresses the uncertainties grandparents feel about their roles, especially if they live far away from their grandchildren. The discussion shows that the lives of grandparents today are a reflection of changes in society and that they may have to reinvent themselves. The secrets offered are meant to be uplifting as well as practical and include tips on awareness, balance, communication, discipline, health, knowledge, and joy. Within each chapter are ideas for outings and activities at home, with reminders about planning ahead, age-appropriate expectations, and coping with meltdowns. Other topics include family traditions and holidays, as well as the quandary about what grandpa and grandma want to be called.
