Thrombotic and thromboembolic disorders are now more than ever the leading causes of morbidity and mortality, having become common medico-social problems with economic consequences in industrialized and developing countries alike. Particularly acute is thrombosis complicating lifestyle-related diseases such as malignancies and arteriosclerosis resulting from diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity, and related conditions.
