There is a Silver Bullet - Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and Biofuels. Set America Free says we can have total energy independence in four years for around $12 billion; about the cost of conducting the Iraq War for 30 days. We are spending over $10 billion a month on imported oil. Set America Free says 50% of U.S. cars are driven 20 miles per day or fewer; a PHEV with a 20-mile electric only range would reduce fuel consumption by 85%. Gas-guzzlers can be replaced by 100mpg PHEVs. The U.S. consumes 140 billion gallons of gasoline per year; 50 million acres of switchgrass (approximately the acreage of the US soil bank) could produce enough ethanol to meet all of our fuel requirements. Switchgrass once fed tens of millions of buffalo; tomorrow it could fuel tens of millions of cars. America can drain Alaska dry and dot our coastlines with oil rigs, but we can't drill our way out of the oil mess. The Middle-East is a Mare's Nest. Biofuels and PHEVs offer America an escape route from this nightmare mad-house. We stand on the threshold of a "Golden Age of American Agriculture." Jefferson's dream will come true. America will become a nation of yeoman farmers - 21st Century Centurions
