When Ruth, Helma Zukas' artist friend, suffers from a broken heart and decides to paint a retrospective of her ample love life she stirs up worries in Bellehaven about exactly what she'll expose. Mysteriously, two of her paintings are stolen from her studio, each depicting a man who died under mysterious circumstances. One is of a chainsaw artist who fell from a tree, chainsaw in hand (ouch). The other a science instructor at the local college who died in his lab. While Helma and Ruth search for the connection between the two men they cross paths with "Ground Up!" an organization that plants trees under the cover of darkness - ensuring plenty of murder and zany mayhem to go around.
