Focusing on the feminine and, more controversially, on the maternal, this book alters our perception of both the familial structures basic to traditional narrative--the Oedipus story--and the narrative structures basic to traditional representations of the family--Freud's family romance. Confronting psychoanalytic theories of subject-formation with narrative theories, Marianne Hirsch traces the emergence and transformation of female family romance patterns from Jane Austen to Marguerite Duras.

目前读过的探讨文学文本中母亲身份的书中最好的一本，但这种历时总结往往有挂一漏万之嫌，选取符合自己框架的作品分析时忽略了很多其他无法带入的作品（如The Tenant of Wildfell Hal如何用female family romance来概括？这样的作品难道没有再现母亲主体性吗？母亲主体性的定义也比较模糊，难道必须通过anger等体现吗）。分析时主要用的是精神分析视角，借用了Freud的family romance概念，并批判地借鉴了Peter Brooks的Reading for the Plot（在弗洛伊德《超越快乐原则》等文本的基础上，用精神分析诠释文本情节）。指出了精神分析视角理解母亲身份的局限，如聚焦女儿而非母亲的主体
