apart from the typical Maugham's brilliant-as-always style of depicting the mental activities of individuals in a society with strong ethic orders, as well as the evolving storyline in face of conflicts in different tempos, i find this book having fewer remarkable points than of Human Bondage and the Moon and Six Pence.

活在一個是非被絕然分割的所謂文明社會中，其殘酷足以令任何心懷疑義又脆弱的人走嚮自我毀滅，任何時候不妨問問麻木的人們，“When you do anything, are you ever tormented by a doubt whether you are doing right or wrong?”毛姆後期作品中對文明社會的質疑在這本早期的小說裏錶現得更為激烈，隻是這個時候的他似乎尚處於迷茫之中，在對與錯的迷宮中找不到齣路，唯有以死收場。
