I hate Toby, although he is only a ten year old. Besides Gina, I think he is also held responsible for the broken marriage between Elinor and Ted when they try to mend it. The end is ambiguous, but in my mind this marriage was dead long ago when Ted decided to sleep with others in the first place. It was not about Elinor's miscarriage, the lost baby or anything else... I can say that people are getting increasingly lonely than ever before. Every character in this story is desperate. Tobby's longing for a father-son bond, Gina's longing for a true love, Ted's longing for passion and Elinor's longing for a real family all illustrate one thing--- the mysterious love lonely people spend their whole life searching for.
