Philosophical aesthetics and theories of art are among the last areas in which feminist critiques of traditional disciplinary assumptions are being explored. "Aesthetics in Feminist Perspective" examines the intellectual traditions of the philosophy of art and aesthetics. Containing essays by scholars and by the writer Marilyn French, the collection ranges from the history of aesthetic theory to a philosophical reflection on fashion. The contributions are unified by a sustained scrutiny of the nature of 'feminist, O 'feminine, O or 'femaleO art, creativity, and interpretation. Some authors are sympathetic to the idea that there is a distinctive female artistic practice, and others question the soundness of that claim. Both the theoretical essays and those that examine particular artists or genres of art represent the tensions between how women are seen, and are judged. The contributors are Ismay Barwell, Carol H.Cantrell, Ren e Cox, Josephine Donovan, Marilyn French, Karen Hanson, Hilde Hein, Mae Gwendolyn Henderson, Jane Kneller, Carolyn Korsmeyer, Estella Lauter, San MacColl, Amy Newman, Jenefer Robinson, Stephanie Ross, Alice Sheppard, Laurie Shrage, Michele Wallace, and Mary Bittner Wiseman.
