Patty幻想自己的死可以换来孩子们的幸福生活，Ben幻想自己的沉默可以保护仅剩的家人，绝望的人做着无望的牺牲，看到结果时却为时已晚。这本书大部分都在讲善良的人要不一直在为别人而活，要不被邪恶丑陋的人撕扯得不知道为何而活，只有到最后才有了一丝希望，但这丝希望很宝贵。
