Georgette Heyer出生于1902年的一个中产阶级家庭，母亲是个音乐家，精通大提琴和钢琴，而父亲George Heyer虽然是一名伦敦大学国王学院的教师，但却衷于写作，经常向英国著名文学杂志《格兰塔》（The Grenta）投稿，也总是鼓励他的三个孩子们多阅读。也正是因为父亲的影响Heyer阅读了大量图书，还经常和后来同为作家的朋友们交流。

1919年，Heyer为了帮她生病卧床的弟弟Boris打发时间而编了一个故事，不仅吸引了她的弟弟，还让她的父亲也十分惊喜。在父亲的帮助下，Heyer将这个故事改编成了她的第一部小说、也是第一部历史罗曼史小说《黑蛾》（The Black Moth），于1921年出版。

1925年，Heyer嫁给了George Ronald Rougier，一位采矿工程师。1926年，她的第五本书《爱与恨的抉择》（These Old Shades）出版。在毫无宣传推广的情况下，这本书的精装版（Hardcover）立刻登顶畅销榜首。也正是因为这个原因，Heyer此后从不为她的作品做宣传。后来，Heyer以《爱与恨的抉择》主角的后代为主角创作了三部续集：《魔鬼之后》（Devil's Cub）、《摄政公子》（Regency Buck）和《狼藉之师》（An Infamous Army）。其中，《摄政公子》是其第一部背景设定在摄政年代（1811-1820）的小说，奠定了摄政罗曼史这个上世纪风靡一时的小说类别的诞生。

Heyer在文坛从上世纪二十年代一直活跃到七十年代去世，创作了不亚于五十部囊括历史罗曼史、侦探、历史正剧题材小说。虽然她已去世四十余年，其小说从未离开公众视线，多次再版、改版（Jane Austen去世后作品断版了近二十年），即使说有的小说被代代相传也并不为过（Goodreads[外国豆瓣读书]上真实事例）。
