The theme of this book is the composition, historical validity and influence of Foxe's Acts and Monuments, a key text of the English Reformation, published in English in four editions between 1563 and 1583.
Foxe's book was disinterred in the 19th century by men seeking to defend the Church of England against the reviving Church of Rome. John Foxe and the English Reformation is a summary of the work of present-day scholars engaged in producing an accurate and critical edition of Foxe's work to replace the polemical and deficient 19th-century texts.
The contributions are all original and authoritative work from some of the most important scholars in the field. They deal with the European contemporaries of Foxe and the continental background of his writing, the nature of the evidence Foxe used to construct his narratives, his literary style, bibliographical study of the many editions of Acts and Monuments, and the iconography expressed in this, one of the most famous and influential sources of images of the Reformation.
David Loades is an Honorary Research Professor in the Department of History at the University of Sheffield.
