本書從社會學角度研究上座部佛教在南亞各地的發展史，把佛教文化與其他文化（如本土宗教、基督教）的碰撞寫得饒有趣味，個人認為還是比較好讀的。最大的缺點是篇幅不閤理，雖然作者非常專業、敘述清晰，但無論如何關於教理/僧團演變的辨明和梳理的篇幅多達五分之三還是有些多瞭。其次，對僧團的日常生活的描寫顯得缺乏史料和例證，這本應是十分重要的部分。
