Elvis s epitaph might almost as appropriately read
1954-1977 because it was between those years that he
earned a reputation as the most popular and famous en-
tertainer the world has ever known.
In slightly more than two decades, as he was firmly es-
tablishing rock-and-roll as a radical and popular new
musical form, Elvis became the bestselling recording art-
ist of all time, eclipsing the number of records sold by
Frank Sinatra and the Beatles combined. Prior to his
death on August 16, 1977, at 42 years of age, he had 45
gold records, each of which had sold more than one mil-
lion copies. No artist had ever sold one million copies of
one record before Elvis, and he is credited by some
within the industry with singlehandedly reviving a rec-
ord business that was sagging dangerously in the days before stereo.
