The Northern Correspondent: 1831-1851 Brief Chronicles, Vol 4 pdf epub mobi txt 电子书 下载 2024
The Northern Correspondent is the fourth
volume in Jean Stubbs popular saga of the
Howarth family, and, like its predecessors,
it is very much a novel in its own right.
Spanning the years of the Industrial Revo-
lution to the triumphant Great Exhibition
of 1851, it traces the story of a great news-
paper and its owner against the back-
ground of the Victorian age in England.
Ambrose Longe, elegant, eccentric, im-
poverished, and of a radical persuasion,
is the editor of The Clarion. His uncle,
William Howarth, the ironmaster, finances
The Lancashire Herald, which reflects the
values of the prosperous establishment.
Thus the lines are drawn between the ideals
of Longe and the business interests of
Howarth and the Lancashire town of
Millbridge becomes the battleground for
the two rival papers.
But The Northern Correspondent is also
a love story. Unexpectedly, Millbridge finds
a stranger in its midst: Naomi Blum, exotic, sophisticated, and rich. And soon, the for-
tunes of both The Clarion and its editor
take a turn for the better.
Many of Stubbs best-loved characters
reappear in The Northern Correspondent,
joined by such new friends as Naomi and
the growing brood of lovable Howarth
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In
this delightful novel, Jean Stubbs once
again paints a heartwarming picture of the
sorrows and joys, tragedies and triumphs of
the new industrial age.
JEAN STUBBS was born in the Lancashire
described in the novels of the Howarth fam-
ily saga. She now lives in a two-hundred-
year-old Cornwall cottage with her husband.
