Some months ago, before the publication of

Bishop Richard Wilke s book, And Are We Yet Alive?,

the editors at Abingdon Press asked me to write a

basic, practical book on doing evangelism in the local

church. The wide acceptance and excitement

created by the bishop s book increased my own

excitement and made me believe that those of us in

The United Methodist Church are ready to take

seriously the mandate to be evangelists.

The model of evangelism described in these pages

has evolved during the last sixteen years of my

ministry. During those years, I have been serving

churches ranging from 1,200 members to the one I

presently serve, which has more than 13,000

members and is located in the center of Houston,

Texas, I have been conscious during the writing,

however, of my own roots, which can be traced to a
