The characters iu Ibis story are at some pains to assert that their
situation is not necessarily typical. Let mc reinforce that assertion: Nonc
0fthe persons, institutions, events or organizations is based on a real-life
counterpart. All are products of nay imagination, save for the inraginary
Latin American country of Costaguana, which, as readers of Nostromo
will recollect, was imagined by Joseph Conrad. Moreover, it is not my
intention to imply that the people and events in this story are "typical."
I have written a story, not a sociological study of North American Ca-
tholicism or a political science study of Latin American Cathohcism.
Those who attempt to find either in nay story do so at their own peril
and in the face of the my explicit repudiation of such a purpose.
My tale is rather of a temptation. Paul Tillich called it "idolatry"--
the confusion of temporal anti contingent political goals, however laud-
able, with tire transcendent and thc absolute in religions revelation.
G. K. Chesterton called it "heresy"-the confusion of part of revelation,
however important, with all of it. Msgr. Ronald Knox called it "enthu-
siasm"the confusion of emotional fervor, however necessary, with re-
ligious conviction. This temptation is as seductive to the right as it is to
the left, to the traditionalist as to tire modernist, to the conservative as
to the lihcrah
Those who dcny that their own particular cause, bc it "liberation"
or "defense ofthc faith," is immune to the temptation admit by that very
denial tlrat they have already succumbed to it.
I intend no judgment as to the extent to which this temptation has
not been resisted m North American Catholic involvement in Latin
America. Such a judgment is beyond my competence and probably at
the present time beyond anyone s competence. To contend, however,
that the temptation has not existed or has always and everywhere been
surmounted is to have already yielded to it.
