著者简介

英国当代名作家阿兰·霍林赫斯特(1954-)，生于英格兰一个中产阶级家庭。自幼喜欢歌剧和建筑艺术。1981年，从牛津大学毕业后来到伦敦；1985年，成为《时代文学增刊》的编辑。1988年以长篇处女作《泳池图书馆》一举成名。第二部长篇，1994年出版的《折叠的星星》进入当年布克奖最后候选名单，并获布莱克纪念奖。这两部小说和分别于1998、2004年出版的《咒语》和《美丽曲线》都是同性恋题材。《美丽曲线》获2004年度布克奖，这是布克奖设立36年来第一次颁发给关于同性恋的小说。

本书讲述牛津大学毕业生尼克，从外向来到伦敦四年的生活经历。他住在伦敦一个保守主义议员的家里，先和牙买加裔公务员利奥相恋并发生了关系，后来又迷上了吸食可卡因上瘾的年轻的黎巴嫩裔百万富翁万尼，成为了他的情人、门客和合作者。在万尼罹患艾滋病、丑闻见诸报端之后，尼克遭遇房东的驱逐。小说借各自人物的活动和命运深入社会的核心，展示时代的变化和发展。在语言的运用、普通人性的剖析和立体塑造上尤见功力。
