艾略特的第一部长篇，已经凸显出鲜明的个人风格。稳重的笔触，深刻的价值观照，虽然部分叙述比较离题，但一到心理描写的片段永远能紧扣读者的心弦。相比Dinah，更对Hetty心生恻隐。

确实是给成年人看的小说，除了爱情还有好多别的呢，艾略特的世界太广大了。奥斯汀的小说里几乎看不到仆人的面目，艾略特这里从牧师绅士到农民到农民家女仆长工，村里私塾先生鞋匠木匠铁匠，一个立体的乡村世界看起来过瘾多了。人的心理写的精妙极了，对话更绝啊。最爱人物之一是个有点象凤辣子的农民媳妇。
