This bold and romantic suspense story
is in the spirit of Mary Stewart and
Daphne Du Maurier. It captures the peo-
ple of the rugged Cornish coast in a time
of savage storms and wild beauty, ship-
wreckers and press gangs, old feuds and
family secrets. The exciting eighteenth-
century romance begins as Julie, a pro-
tected Londoner, comes to Cornwall as
Ben Polventon s bride. His return from
the Continent at his father s death was
swiftly followed by their wedding. But
Julie, though very much in love, knows
the marriage arranged in their youth is
one Ben would never have made had the
choice been his. Polventon, an estate in
ruins, does not welcome the newlyweds.
Though Ben will be heir, the seaside farm
is owned by a murderous pirate. Their
new home abounds in mysterious and
strange happenings. The excise men think
Polventon is headquarters for a smug-
gling and shipwrecking ring. The nearby
village offers neither safety nor friendship
-the people harbor bitter memories of
one from Polventon whose treachery led
