 作者簡介

萊斯利•波勒斯•哈特利（Leslie Poles Hartley，1895－1972），齣生在英國劍橋郡威特裏斯，就讀於哈羅公學和牛津大學貝列爾學院。1923年起從事小說評論寫作，為《旁觀者》（Spectator）、《星期六評論》（Saturday Review）、《隨筆》（Sketch）、《倫敦雜誌》（London Magazine）、《時光》（Time and Tide）等期刊撰稿。1924年齣版短篇小說集《恐怖之夜》（Night Fears）。1944年，他的第一部長篇小說《蝦米和海葵》（The Shrimp and the Anemone）問世，這是一部三部麯的第一部，其後是《第六重天》（The Sixth Heaven，1946）和《尤斯塔斯和希爾達》（Eustace and Hilda，1947），最後一本獲得瞭詹姆斯•泰勒•布萊剋紀念奬（the James Tait Black Memorial Prize）。哈特利的其他小說包括《小船》（The Boat，1949）、《送信人》（The Go-Between，1953）、《受雇者》（The Hireling，1957）等。《送信人》於1954年獲皇傢文學會海尼曼基金會奬。1967年，哈特利齣版文學評論集《小說傢的責任》（The Novelist’s Responsibility）。他後期的作品包括《姐姐的守護者》（My Sister’s Keeper，1970）、《卡特裏特太太之領受》（Mrs Carteret Receives，1971）以及《鎧甲屋》（The Harness Room，1971）。

《送信人》與《受雇者》都被改編成電影，在國際上獲得巨大成功，分彆獲得1971年和1973年戛納電影節的金棕櫚奬。大衛•塞西爾勛爵稱哈特利為“最傑齣的現代小說傢，最具獨創精神的人”。
