College-Prep Introductory Algebra is
designed for college students who demonstrate a deficiency in algebra skills
which are generally taught in a high school algebra I course. The only prereq-
uisite to the text is a moderate degree of proficiency in arithmetic. The nec-
essary arithmetic skills can be reviewed in the Arithmetic Unit. The arithmetic
is incorporated in the Arithmetic Unit rather than Chapter ] of the text, since
the authors maintain that the targeted students should be presented imme-
diately with the integers and vocabulary which these students relate to "al-
gebra" rather than "arithmetic." Students are often turned off and/or
overconfident if they are presented with "arithmetic" rather than "algebra" at
the outset of an algebra course.
