西方的中国形象。这本书首先是对从马可·波罗以来一直到二十世纪的西方人文献中的中国形象以时间顺序作了一个大致的梳理。实际上，研究中国形象的相关方面的整理现在已经很多了，但是作者做的这一研究可能属于比较早期的。近年来中国学者周宁的研究思路大致相同。其次，作者在理论方法的运用以及阐释的深度上比较欠缺，基本上是一些文献的综述，而并未有一个非常明确的argument来支撑。所谓的运用福柯的知识/权力与萨义德东方主义的理论也非常牵强，并没有非常具体的阐释，在这一点方面确实有欠缺。将其看作材料索引或许更好。
