Born in 1938, Cohen got his doctor's degree in Yale School of Drama, 1965. Now he is the professor of drama in University of California, Irving. A prestigious dramatic critic in America, Cohen has published several important theatrical texts and books, among which Theatre (8th edition) and Acting One, Acting Two and Acting Power, Acting Professionally: Raw Facts about Careers in Acting are widely used in Western universities. Some of their Chinese translations are also available in many libraries and key universities in China.

Cohen is also a famous theater director, directing many famous plays including King Lear, Macbeth, My Fair Lady, etc.
