The great 14th-century Moroccan wanderer Battúta spent half his long life on the move. He went deep into Africa, circled India, and reached Russia, Sumatra, Shanghai. He was sometimes wealthy, sometimes penniless, often in danger. His book reminds us how ignorant we are of lives lived outside the Western tradition, and of a time when all travel was adventurous.
