Volumes have been written about African American history. This book
should start you toward a basic understanding of several areas of Afri-
can American life and history, and refer you to some basic sources for
further research.
The subjects in this book were chosen for their relevance to black
history and culture. The individuals I have profiled here were selected
for their extraordinary accomplishments and stunning perseverance.
Many other individuals could have been included in this book, but time
and space restrictions have forced me to limit the book to the twenty-six
individuals listed here.
