Three years ago in Dirty Realism , _Granta
introduced a group of eight American authors
who wrote a new kind of fiction. It was a fiction -
spare, unillusioned, but compassionate- of the
belly-side of American life: trailer parks, roadside
caf6s and small mid-western towns. Three years
ago these writers - among them Raymond
Carver, Jayne Anne Phillips and Richard Ford -
were virtually unknown in Britain; today the3, are
seen as representatives of a new voice or school
in American writing. In More Dirt Granta offers
fiction not only from many of the contributors to
that first American issue, but also from a number
of younger writers - writers who, like their
predecessors three years ago, are not known in
this country,,,, yet.
