With the exception of Billy Budd, which Melville wrote in his
old age, the tales in this volume were written in the years be-
tween 1852 and 1856. During these years Melville was living
on his farm, "Arvowhoad," at Pittsfield, Massachusetts, with his
wife and (by 1855) his four children. Melville s tales are o~
course interesting in themselves and quite apart from the per-
sonal career of their author--interesting, that is, for their suc-
cesses and failures of language, structure, plot, and symbol-
ization, as well as for their general qualities of sensibility and
intelligence, and it is these successes and failures which must
count most heavily with us as we read the tales and form our
opinions of them.
