From Publishers Weekly "You always gotta be different," Vinnie the plumber tells his girlfriend, Tina Scacciapensieri, the half-Italian, half-Jewish, wholly working-class narrator of this appealing first novel. Vinnie's not so wrong. Tina isn't like the other secretaries at the office where she types and gossips with her friend Angie. When she discovers she's pregnant, Tina reluctantly agrees to marry her Brooklyn boyfriend, then proceeds to fall in love with a sophisticated Manhattan lawyer. Tina's story runs the course of her unplanned pregnancy, during which time she makes some important choices about what she wants from life. Speaking through this humorous and insightful woman, Wing illuminates the family dynamic as well as the emotions that bind people to their friends, lovers and co-workers. It's regrettable that class distinctions--firmly drawn in the opening chapters--fall by the wayside as the plot builds, but the unexpected, powerful conclusion and Tina's unusual brio more than compensate. From Library Journal Tina Scacciapensieri, the plucky, street-smart heroine of Angie, I Says, is pregnant. Alone and unwilling to marry her baby's father, Vinnie, Tina decides to keep the baby and take a shot at life on her own. Vinnie "wants to get married, and I don't," Tina says, "I mean maybe it's crazy, but I have the baby myself, I still have a life. I marry Vinnie...I don't have my life no more. I have his life. His kid." Tina's best friend is Angie, a fellow secretary at the deadend trade publication where they both work, and it is to Angie whom she turns for advice. Angie, however, is not the person to "ask" as Angie's husband has the nasty habit of hitting her. And sister Jeanette thinks Tina is crazy not to marry Vinnie. This gutsy little novel is a refreshing addition to the field of audiobooks. Narrator Theresa Saldana captures the authentic nuances of the characters and the colorful, sassy language of our heroine. The recent movie starring Geena Davis should stir demand. Highly recommended.Gretchen Browne, Rockville Centre P.L., N.Y.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition. See all Editorial Reviews
