d in<br >owrleI"<br >PREFACE<br > This textbook is designed to be used in conjunction with the<br >American Red Cross Standard First Aid and Personal Safety course.<br >The purpose of the course is to provide the general public with the<br >knowledge and skills called for in most situations in which emer-<br >gency first aid care is required and medical assistance is not exces-<br >sively delayed. The textbook also incorporates information on<br >personal safety and accident prevention， so that people can learn<br >the causes of accidents and act to eliminate or minimize such causes.<br > Because of significant developments in the fields of first aid for<br >foreign body obstruction of the airway， oral poisoning， and snake-<br >bite， the Red Cross asked the Division of Medical Sciences of the<br >National Research Council， National Academy of Sciences， to re-<br >view these subjects for the purpose of updating material in the<br >1973 edition. As a result of these reviews， more current remedial<br >procedures have been defintgt through the Emergency Medical<br > .%，..<br >Services Committee of the Dlvlslon of Medical Sciences and pro-<br >vided in this second edition of the STANDARD FIRST AID AND PER-<br >SONAL SAFETY textbook.
