First published in 1972, it was based on the BBC television series about which the (London) Sunday Times critic commented: "This is an eye-opener in more ways than one: by concentrating on how we look at paintings... he will almost certainly change the way you look at pictures." 著者简介

John Berger was born in London in 1926. He is well known for his novels and stories as well as for his works of nonfiction, including several volumes of art criticism. His first novel, A Painter of Our Time, was published in 1958, and since then his books have included the novel G., which won the Booker Prize in 1972. In 1962 he left Britain permanently, and he lives in a small village in the French Alps.

看到最后的时候才发现，恍惚的觉得，原来爷爷是反资本主义啊。。。忘了之前是在哪里看到的了，说，艺术家和艺术存在的意义，不是要给出解决问题的方案，而是要通过他们的观察和创作，给大众提供一种认识世界并改变世界的可能（大意）。所以，berger爷爷在做的，大概就是让大众怎么才能看到这种“可能”吧。。。

以为是纯艺术的书没想到是反思油画文化和批判资本主义的…那3篇图片论文没看懂，然而文字部分写得太好了，观察入微且非常尖刻，在开骂之前的论述观点独到而且详尽也是很令我长见识。写的都是我特别感兴趣的话题：艺术品的解释权垄断；女性客体化；艺术和占有之间的关系；对消费主义的批判。
