著者简介

英国诗人。出生于温切斯特附近一个牧师家庭。早年在牛津大学攻读。1725年发表讽刺诗集《普遍的激情》，赢得了声誉。后来加入教会，成为英王宫廷牧师之一。长诗《哀怨，或关于生命、死亡和永生的夜思》（简称《夜思》，1742～1745）出版后，曾轰动欧洲。此诗写丧妻失女之痛，有浓厚的感伤情绪；作者沉溺于宇宙幻灭的痛苦之中，以灵魂不死之说作为唯一的安慰。他的论文《试论独创性作品》(1759)反对盲目崇拜和模仿古人，力求创新，表达了当时开始影响文学界的前期浪漫主义思潮的一个重要方面。
