Review
"...the A to Z of achieving high style on a high-street budget." ~Harper's Bazaar
"A magical mish-mash of straight-from-the-soul style advice. Unlike most how-to books...this one functions more like a 128-page inspiration manual than a checklist for re-programming your Don't'ness." ~Refinery29.com
"Shopping at the mall won't make you look like a zoot-suiter, Marlene Dietrich or any of the New York Dolls, but this book just might." ~Salon.com
Product Description
Forget makeover culture, forget slavishly following fashion diva dictates, forget your insecurities—forget everything you’ve ever read in fashion magazines! This guide shows you that the secret to finding your inherent natural style is to have fun and be inspired. Kira Jolliffe and Bay Garnett, clothing aficionados and editors of Britain’s hit Cheap Date magazine, show you how to build your style without going broke, going mad, or coming out looking like everyone else. Included are chapters on developing your own sense of style, the art of accessorizing, and crafting a cool wardrobe from a mix of cheap basics and chic secondhand finds. Because "to be stylish, you need to be into clothes, and if you’re into clothes, you’re into finding them," the CD girls share their time-tested strategies for thrifting, including how to identify prized finds. For further inspiration, throughout the book there are interviews with some of the world’s most stylish women, including Mischa Barton, Rachel Weisz, and Chloë Sevigny. Following the age-old mantra "the rules are—there are no rules," this sophisticated yet scrappy guide will refresh and reinvigorate both you and your wardrobe.
Bay Garnett has established a strong position within fashion styling, editorial and consultancy. Born in 1973 in Bath, in the UK Garnett studied Art History and Modern History at Exeter University. She gained initial experience in galleries such as the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Pace Wildenstein in New York and working for photographic agency Art Department. In 1997 she launched acclaimed underground, anti-fashion magazine 'Cheap Date' in New York with Kira Jolliffe, which has won them the title 'thrift pioneers'. The magazine has contributors such as Anita Pallenberg, Chloe Sevigny, Liv Tyler and Debbie Harry. Since 2002 she is has been Style Director for British designer Matthew Williamson, and a Contributing Editor for British Vogue. In 2004 she designed a limited edition range for Top Shop and consulted for the label Chloe.
