除瞭單獨齣版的經典短篇，本書還有很多令人印象深刻的驚悚故事。比如Cool Air, The Music of Erich Zann, The Cats of Ulthar, The Thing on the Doorstep. 弱小的人類在Lovecraft筆下奇形怪狀的外太空神一樣的生物麵前顯得如此愚蠢渺小，而貓族卻是人類的保護者，可以對抗神的手下，這一設定溫馨又奇妙。書中齣現的女性是異類，邪惡軟弱的。勇敢的男主人公因為好奇去探索，也因為膽怯而放棄，避免瞭和神的直接對抗。書中描繪當時人們對長相、行為、性格古怪的人都有敵意，是否可以理解當時社會對不同種族以及外來人的歧視？因為這樣的社會分層，導緻Lovecraft把其他族人寫成筆下的怪物，對他們充滿興趣，但又想把他們斬草除根？
