The city, seen under hot summer skies during the "white nights" the period of almost 24 hour daylight is beautifully evoked. Fallowell also conveys the fading, crumbling city, with its combination of splendour and smelly squalid decay. If you are at all interested in how things are in Russia today, then this book would be a good place to start.
