伊利诺伊大学芝加哥分校社会学教授，兼该校政治学与城市规划政策教授，德克萨斯州大学奥斯汀分校研究所研究员，上海复旦大学社会发展与公共政策学院客座教授，上海社会科学院城市区域研究中心荣誉研究员。曾当选氨美华裔社会学学会主席和美国社会学学会社区与都市分会理事。先后获得美国学术社会委员（ACLS）、美国社会学学会、开放社会研究所及哈佛大学的奖励及奖助。主要研究领域为城市和经济发展，万其关注中国以及东亚城市的发展。发表了许多关于城市研究的文章，并撰写著作《当疆界扭曲时》
