The use of case studies to build and test theories in political science and the other social sciences has increased in recent years. Many scholars have argued that the social sciences rely too heavily on quantitative research and formal models and have attempted to develop and refine rigorous methods for using case studies. This text presents a comprehensive analysis of research methods using case studies and examines the place of case studies in social science methodology. It argues that case studies, statistical methods, and formal models are complementary rather than competitive. The book explains how to design case study research that will produce results useful to policymakers and emphasizes the importance of developing policy-relevant theories. It offers three major contributions to case study methodology: an emphasis on the importance of within-case analysis, a detailed discussion of process tracing, and development of the concept of typological theories. Case Studies and Theory Development in the Social Sciences will be particularly useful to graduate students and scholars in social science methodology and the philosophy of science, as well as to those designing new research projects, and will contribute greatly to the broader debate about scientific methods.

此书是在复旦还是学国际政治的时候所阅读过的一部比较早期的研究方法的指导手册。的确，明确地指出一种研究方法的作用和局限多少对于从事实证研究的学生是有很强的指导意义的。但是，指出一种方法目前所可能的局限和用处与学生所需要用这种方法解决特定的问题，这一点密切相连。一些国内的“大师”曾经谆谆告诫，某些方法（比如实验方法），就社会科学的“本质”而言，是有局限的。这种意见，坦率地来说，是误人子弟。原因很简单，很难想象，在学术研究这种高度社会分工的条件下，一个学生决定从事何种工作或者知识的生产，是可以实现由某些无所不知的全能型人才所事先决定的。方法论的多元化，意味着研究目的的差异化。その以上、その以下でもない。案例研究对于研究设计有相当重要的作用。研究者们明确自己使用案例的目的和不确定性，是很重要的
